A Study of the Density of Shadow

Saint Louis, MO

Washington University in St. Louis, 2014

The goal of this project was to develop a surface from information gathered from a study of an ancient sculpture. This sculpture is a 2nd century Roman Sarcophagus displaying an intense battle scene, and was used for the burial of a General. Through the studies of the sarcophagus using light, shadow, depth, and density of carvings systematic patterns emerge. Using these patterns, an image is formed that is completely different from the one studied. This new image works as a framework to construct a new surface. The new surface is milled using the data received and within it a node of structure is exposed and spreads.
